Strong cold-season winds brought walls down upon fragile shelters sheltering Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. This tragedy underscores the perilous living conditions that persist after more than two years of intense airstrikes and severe lack of aid.

Truce Offers Little Respite from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been in effect from last fall, aid groups report that Palestinians do not have the sufficient shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, reported on Tuesday that the deceased include two women, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in every possible way," stated a family member following the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three people of a single family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 others were injured in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday began clearing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as nutrition and hygiene items throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of the population reside in improvised tents since their houses were turned into rubble during the war. Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Numbers After the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, reports over four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by Israeli fire and their remains taken to hospitals after the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry keeps detailed casualty data that are seen as generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on Tuesday that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – 60 boys and forty females – had been lost their lives since the ceasefire started because of armed actions, including drone strikes, airstrikes, tank shelling and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he explained, represented incidents where enough details had been gathered to warrant recording, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video link from the Strip. "So what the international community now calls calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while facing lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently required throughout the colder season. This marks the third winter since the conflict between the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports more than 71,400 Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
