What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
