The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
