The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
