Suspected Bondi Beach Attackers Operated Independently and Did Not Undergo Instruction in the Philippines, Authorities State.

The two alleged individuals responsible for the deadly attack at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives, appear to have been lone actors, according to Australian law enforcement.

Police further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, flew to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary involved arriving in the main city Manila before connecting that same day to Davao City. The pair flew back to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Planning During Visit

Authorities assert the duo did not undergo any type of attack-related coaching or "logistical preparation" during their visit in the Philippines. Initial findings from Philippine authorities indicate they "mostly stayed in" their accommodation.

The incident—described as Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996—has been officially classified as a act of terrorism.

"We are currently examining the material," she said, noting that initial evaluations indicate that "the alleged offenders are suspected to have acted alone."

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett informed media on Tuesday that CCTV footage documenting the alleged gunmen's movements in the Philippines had been provided to Australian authorities.

"There is little to no indication to suggest these accused individuals were part of a wider organization, or were directed by external parties to carry out an incident," Commissioner Barrett said.

But, the men were also not necessarily in the Philippines as tourists, the official noted. She stressed that, since the investigation is still active, fresh information may surface.

Inspiration and Legal Charges

Previously, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remarked it appears both alleged gunmen were "influenced by Islamic State" ideology.

During the incident, Sajid Akram was shot dead by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—equipped with rifles—are accused of having shot guests at the Hanukkah celebration.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been charged with 59 charges. These comprise 15 charges of murder and one count of perpetrating a terrorist act. He is expected to face court in April.

In the wake following the shooting, immigration officials in the Philippines stated that the older suspect had entered the country using an foreign passport, while his younger suspect used an domestic passport.

The pair had listed the southern city of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their booked journey back to Australia was for Sydney.
