SNAP Payments Scheduled to Cease for Over 40 Million Amid Ongoing Federal Shutdown

The United States Department of Agriculture declared on Saturday that nutrition assistance payments from a major federal support systems won't be issued next month amid the persistent federal closure.

Impasse Persists Into 25th Day

The federal closure had reached nearly a month when the announcement was made, coming after demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives asking the USDA to utilize emergency reserves to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people rely on these monthly payments, per official statistics. Various areas, such as New Mexico, dependence on the program affects a significant portion of citizens.

Documents reviewed by Reuters revealed that federal authorities would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Partisan Impasse

Lawmakers from both parties are still at odds regarding how to fund and reopen government operations.

A statement from the leader of a budget research center suggested that federal leadership had chances to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps before now to get ready to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them for potential political benefit” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to vote for legislation to restart federal functions.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols this week to make money available to combat potential hunger preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
