New Trump Doctrine Points to Europe's Core Issue: A Supposed Shortfall of Racism?

Throughout his initial presidency, commentators frequently advised that Donald Trump's statements should be taken seriously rather than literally. However, subsequent events indicate that this approach could have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple comments from administration officials, Trump proxies, and the former president have precipitated what could be one of the most profound challenges for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Civilizational Fear

Whereas Trump's earlier complaint focused on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own defense, his rhetoric has now embraced a far more alarming outlook.

Colored by racism and a deep-seated disdain for Europe's political institutions and officials, he has spoken about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he barely knows and mostly viewed from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

"A lengthy discussion lacking in clear ideological coherence is instead replete with another element: the confused fear of an ageing white man confronted with demographic shifts."

This paranoid worldview, which has already influenced harsh American border and policing policies, is now clearly to be informing Washington's prism of Europe.

A Xenophobic Thesis

According to this logic, migration from the global south leads to a weakening of European societies, rendering them "feeble" under "stupid" leaders and setting the stage for their demise. This is an openly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right political parties across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is not new, its meaning for the continent's defense are critically important.

For Trump and his adherents—including billionaire Elon Musk, who has called for the breakup of the European Union—all politics is fundamentally a deal. However, while he once claimed was about burden-sharing, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is undeserving due to its shift toward diversity.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of rhetorical loop. He concedes that the Kremlin wants a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe to be weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures between Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European unity—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, with a devastating war in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for not listening to European leaders.

The European Response

These developments demands a firm response from European leadership. While some leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their pushback, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have continued with a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

Recently, the UK government refused to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister enjoys a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the British public."

The stark reality is that Trump means what he says and repeats them consistently. It is past time to stop pretending that things are different.
