Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Just last month, the mayor had strongly criticized the former governor, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.
“It's essential to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this election is,” Adams commented.
He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has made headlines worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”
This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
