Cameroon Opposition Figure Faces Court Action Over Post-Election Violence, Government Says
Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has declared that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over accusations that he instigated "violent election protests".
At least 4 demonstrators have been lost their lives during skirmishes between police and military and demonstrators since the electoral process on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth term in office.
Tchiroma Bakary maintains that he was the true winner, a statement rejected by the incumbent party, the CPDM.
Aggressive responses by law enforcement on demonstrators have worried the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for moderation.
Official's Allegations
Recently, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he labeled "unauthorized" protests leading to the deaths, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.
He noted that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.
Vote Outcome
Paul Biya, who took control in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, obtained the 12 October presidential election with 53.7% of the votes, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.
Leader's Stance
Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the government's decision to try him, but he had before stated that he rejected a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being detained.
On election result day, he reported that gunmen opened fire on protesters gathered near his residence in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 individuals.
Investigation Launched
Recently, the government official disclosed that an inquiry would be started into violent incidents prior to and following the declaration of the poll figures.
"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved died," he commented, without giving a specific number of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the incidents.
Nji added that multiple officers of the law enforcement also suffered serious injuries.
Current Situation
Although Nji asserted the condition nationwide was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in various areas of the nation, especially in urban centers, where protesters established barricades on Tuesday, and set fire to tires on the streets.
Analysts caution that the political turmoil could push the nation into a leadership vacuum.
